The Deacon of Myrka
This is a popular Icelandic tale of a love beyond the grave. A deacon fell in love with a young girl by the name of Gudrun (Gud meaning God and run meaning (old run stones). He invited her to come to Myrka for the Christmas festivities, and promised to come for her on Christmas Eve. But the night he came for her, he perished in a river. His body was found the next day, and was laid to rest. Unbeknownst to Gudrun, she was preparing for her departure for Myrka. The night came, and there was a knock upon her door. It was her dead lover to come for her. They rode into the night coming to the place where he was laid to rest. He said: The moon is gliding across the sky,
Death is riding; cant you see a white spot in the back of my head, Garun, Garun? (he says Garun becasue he cant say God)
When Garun hears this, she ran to the church and rang the bells. The deacon grabbed for her, only managing to grasp her cape and take it with him into his grave. For many nights his spirit tormented Garun, until a man who was skilled in sorcery was able to commit the man back to his earthly home.
I thought the picture was absolutely beautiful in every way. Feet up or down-regardless. I loved the air coming from the nostrils of the horse also. The man and woman were really so romantic on the horse. I am a romantic so it was awesome!!
